First, don’t panic. Second, don’t blame the IRS. The IRS has been ordered to convert to electronic payments. How to respond to the Notice requesting bank information? There are two choices: Wait or Set up an Online IRS Taxpayer Account.
WAITING: If Taxpayers don’t respond to the IRS Refund “No Bank Info on File” Notice and wait approximately six weeks after the Notice response date, the IRS will still issue refund checks (at least for 2025 tax year).
ONLINE ACCOUNT: The IRS will not accept direct deposit information over the phone. For Taxpayers who want a speedier refund, the IRS Refund “No Bank Info on File” Notice will direct them to set up an ID.me log on or “wallet”. The ID.me log on is then used to open an IRS Online Taxpayer Account. After the IRS Online Taxpayer account is successfully opened, Taxpayer’s can securely provide their bank information to receive their refund.
Please Note: ID.me is a third party vendor that is not part of the IRS. To set up an ID.me “wallet” and/or IRS Account, see: https://www.irs.gov/privacy-disclosure/creating-an-account-for-irsgov#about
